Message from the President

August, 2017

Salvete Sodales

For those of us who are educators, the summer days can be a time of replenishment, rest and renewal.  Hopefully, you’ve been doing just that:  reading some, traveling some, catching up with family and friends, and, of course, starting to plan for the new school year.

We are so fortunate in this Tri-State area to have museums in the back yard.  Museums rich with Classical exhibits.  Try to find time to make a trip yourself, or to plan a school trip with your students.

Some of the gems that may be near to your schools are:  The Newark Museum, the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, and the Princeton University Art Museum.  If you fancy a trip to New York, there is always the Metropolitan Museum of Art; but don’t forget about the Frick Collection on East 70th Street—the building, itself, is a wonderful piece of architecture.

Our next New Jersey Classical Association meeting will be on Saturday, October 21, 2017 in Pennsauken, New Jersey.  For one of the portions of our program, we would like to present our members with “resources” available.  These resources would include those for the specific textbooks from which you teach, other resources would be scholarships that would be available to members.

We are looking for you to provide us with a list of any resources for scholarships that you know about and we will compile a list for ready reference.

Also, we are seeking your assistance for the following part of our program.  If you would be willing to spend a few minutes talking about available resources for the textbooks from which you teach, we are looking for volunteers.  So far, we have the following textbooks in mind, but we could certainly use your assistance in expanding on our list.  If there is a textbook that you use that is not on the list, please advise and we will add it:

Cambridge Latin Course

Ecce Romani

Latin for the New Millenium

Jenney’s Latin Course

Something important to note is renewal of your membership and payment of your NJCA dues.  If you have not yet renewed your membership, please do that as soon as possible.  You may print a copy of the form from this web site and mail your check to Marlene, or you may pay on the NJCA web site via PayPal.

We continue to work toward some of our goals and we have found someone to take on the position of NJCA historian.  We welcome any information for our web site--historical or not.

Enjoy the season and mark your calendars for October 21st.  Looking forward to seeing you all in Pennsauken.
